Bayer Leverkusen broke plenty of records to win the Bundesliga 2023-24. Xabi Alonso’s team were unbeaten throughout the season. Things are not the same this time around. Other teams are getting back to the business and again fighting for the league title. The likes of Bayern Munich have a new manager. Vincent Kompany has added a new dynamic to the team. His team is currently at the top of the table.
One team that is going head-to-head with Bayern Munich is RB Leipzig. Marco Rose’s team is one of the two unbeaten teams in the Bundesliga 2024-25 after seven matches. One of the biggest reasons behind this is the defensive display of the team. RB Leipzig have the best defensive record in the league. The team has kept a tight line and is level on points with the league leaders.
34-year-old Peter Gulacsi is not letting anyone break Leipzig’s defence. The Hungarian has kept six clean sheets in seven matches. The only match in which he was beaten was against Bayer Leverkusen. Other than this, teams have found it difficult to break the shackles.
Injuries have troubled the Hungarian in the last two seasons. He managed 19 Bundesliga appearances in two full seasons for the club. As RB Leipzig fights for a maiden Bundesliga title, we look at how Gulacsi could be the key for the German club.
Best defensive record
RB Leipzig’s defence hasn’t given breathing space to the opposition players. A tight line has only allowed the opposition team to score two goals. Both goals came from the edge of the six-yard box. 35 shots have been blocked, a few were saved and others were off the target.
The veteran Hungarian goalkeeper averages 3.57 saves per 90 minutes. Gulacsi has a save percentage of 92.6%. Six clean sheets in the first seven games is the best record in the league. He has taken a big lead in the race for the Golden Glove.
Things have not gone in the right path for the Hungarian. He has already conceded five goals in the UEFA Champions League in the first two matches. Only four shots have been saved. This defensive record could cost Leipzig in Europe.
Peter Gulacsi doesn’t like to stay at the back. On occasions, he came out of the box and took touches in the middle of the park. Other than this, the Hungarian has a wide range of passing. These even include some long passes into the opposition’s half.
Strong comeback
Peter Gulacsi was out injured in the 2023-24 season. He only featured in 13 Bundesliga matches and kept five clean sheets. Gulacsi was outstanding as he saved the shots going in the bottom corner. He averaged 2.6 saves with a 78.6% save percentage.
RB Leipzig’s manager will be happy with the way the team is performing. Gulacsi is leading from the back. He will be a key to keep his side in contention for the Bundesliga title.
