With the start of the Premier League season underway and Werner’s first game out of the way, the £47 million star opened up about the differences between the Bundesliga and The Premier League. Of course, many avid readers will be only too aware of the subtle differences of playing in Germany, but it was great to hear it from someone with direct experience of the 2 leagues.
Werner had the following to say:
“The game is totally different. There is more space but when you come out in the second half and the game was totally different – [it] changed completely. Brighton gave us a lot of problems.
“I played against three massive defenders, you don’t have that in Germany. I’m happy to be here and I think it was a good first game for me and the team.
“Brighton did very well from the beginning and pressed us high. The second game will become harder because it is Liverpool. I tried and did my best and got an assist for the team.
One facet that Werner will undoubtedly find as he progresses through the season, is the strength and depth of the Premier League is far greater than that of the Bundesliga. Whilst the German star enjoyed great success at RB Leipzig, one of the stronger teams in the Bundesliga, he will find out very quickly that the battle to reach the Champions League places, let alone winning the title is that much more intense over in England.
Chelsea have been relentless in the transfer market this season, with the arrival of another Bundesliga star in Kai Havertz, it remains to be seen whether the players can gel in time to deliver an effective title challenge. They started with a win in Brighton and if they continue in that fashion they may well be there or thereabouts.
